Tasting note
Golden amber colour; sweet, smoky nose with hints of sherry and orange rind; spicy with nutty, orange and sherry flavours; long, warm finish
The Balvenie DoubleWood is a 12 year old single malt which gains its distinctive character from being matured in two woods. It has a nose of sweet fruit and Oloroso sherry notes, layered with honey and vanilla. It is smooth and mellow with beautifully combined flavours of nutty sweetness, cinnamon spiciness, and a delicately proportioned layer of sherry. The finish is long and warming.
A little spiced rum opens up the nose with gorgeous hints of date and walnut cake, a little honeyed oiliness, a dusting of cocoa and lush crystallized ginger. The mouth feel is delicately vinous, in true Balvenie style, the palate holds winter spice and salty butter pastry with a sweet vanilla and melted cookie dough ice-cream. The finish is tight and swift, the bourbon oak notes fading out with added toasty vanilla.
Featured in TASTE Magazine, Winter 2012 issue. This smooth-drinking, approachable single malt is aged for 12 years in American bourbon casks with some of the whisky spending a further nine months in Sherry butts then married for further aging. The Doublewood is complex with malted barley, vanilla, honey and dried fruit, a peppery kick and slight peatiness.
