Tasting note
The 2009 Formiga is a blend of 60% Garnacha, 20% Carinena and 20% Syrah from 10-year-old vines located above 300 meters sea level. It is aged for 9 months in 4- to 6-year-old barrels (85% French). It has an attractive, floral bouquet with scents of dark cherries, wild strawberry and slate that is well-defined and what you might describe as 'unpretentious.' There is nothing wrong with that. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and crisp acidity that allows the red currant, wild strawberry and raspberry fruit to shine. The oak complements rather than overwhelms the fruit. This is an excellent example of the finesse that Priorat can offer. Drink 2013-2025. Score - 92. (Neal Martin, erobertparker.com, April 2012)
This dry, full-bodied and woody red displays a complex and medium nose. On the palate, its refreshing acidity, fleshy tannins, and broad texture precede a long finish.
“All hail Priorat and this spicy, floral, curry, black peppery, liquorice scented red. Love the dry, supple palate and its smoky, peppery, black cherry jam and meaty, licorice and cedar flavours. Good intensity and balance throughout despite a bit of heat on the finish. Fine effort for current drinking with lamb stew. Rated 91 points.” Anthony Gismondi
