Tasting note
The calliope hummingbird is the smallest bird in Canada, and the Figure 8 Red is named for the pattern the bird's wings describe while hovering in place. Composed from 55% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2014 Calliope is a floral, fruity wine with impressive dark fruit and spice tones. A perfectly named wine that demonstrates lovely balance and elegance while maintaining an approachable style. (Vintages panel, Feb. 2016)
A lively, fresh fruity aroma combining the spicy, peppery and smoked game meat notes of Syrah with the bright red fruits of Merlot with raspberry, plum and cherry. This is supported by well incorporated oak giving aromas of custard, coffee and liqueur chocolates. The palate is juicy with refreshing acidity and intense flavors of raspberry, pepper, spice and balanced oak that last throughout the lingering finish. The vivacious acidity makes this well suited to rich tomato based dishes such as a slow cooked spaghetti Bolognese.
